Fascism Essay Fascism is ââ¬Å"a form of extreme right-wing ideologyâ⬠(Lyons, 2007) that promotes nationalism or the staging of own race as the superior in the world. It urges the people of a country to unite for nation-building after times of downfall and destruction, and scrap traces of individualism, materialistic attitudes, and foreigners. It especially believes in the capability of violence to change the landscape of the country and let it grow for the better. This form of government was established by Benito Mussolini of Italy, and later influencing Adolf Hitler of Germany. King Victor Emmauel III of Italy feared the occurrence of civil war in the country if the next prime minister was not a Socialist or a Fascist. This was the reason why Mussolini was given seat in the government to be the head of the Council Ministers. However, after two years, he established himself as the new ââ¬Å"head of the governmentâ⬠taking over several ministries and headed on his way to start dictatorship. He kept power in his hands and prevented resistance by starting a police state. He created an imaginary free press by not allowing people who did not have certificate of approval from the Fascist Party to practice journalism, and that all editors were personally chosen by himself. He privatized several institutions to keep up with his financiers. He also commenced the invasion of some countries of the world, especially the Mediterranean region. Hitler, on the other hand, gained respect and salutation from many politicians including the then President Paul von Hinderburg. He appealed largely to the farmers, war veterans and the rest of middle class for a reconstruction of the economy and military components of the country, and simultaneously promoting nationalism and anti-communism, like what Mussolini did. Though lost in presidential election in 1932, he established himself as a good alternative for a new and more stable government, clamoured by the people. It was in 1933 when he was appointed by the President as the new Chancellor of the country. When the President died in 1934, all the roles and tasks of the head of the state was transferred to him. This made him supreme and do whatever he wanted. With the continuing growth in the number of believers of fascism, they had moved up to be the controller of their country during their time. Both have used the common people to start a massive base of supporters. Both of them were also endorsed and seated to their high positions by higher ranking officials: the King of Italy for Mussolini; while the President of Germany for Hitler. With their hold on the primary ministries of their respective countries, they were able to deploy their military components to bring war against Britain and France, which also declared war against them when they tried to get additional states for their country. When Hitler annexed Austria to Germany, and defeated several other countries, Mussolini was convinced to campaign for war against the Allied Powers of France and Britain. Their team-up led to further outrage by the other powerful nations in the world like the United States of America and the Soviet Union. Both of their dreams of expanding their territories led to failures because they chose to stage war against more powerful countries. Mussolini failed on making Italy self-sustaining because the country lacks the basic resources. Hitler failed in building the country he dreamed of because of the multiple counts of human rights violation, most notably exemplified in the Holocaust.

Mandatory sentencing is not anything new. It began in the 1970s. The main purpose for mandatory sentencing was to try to get rid of the drug lords and to eliminate most of the nationââ¬â¢s street drug selling. It was to impose that the same crime would have the same sentence all over the nation. Some of the negatives that rose from mandatory sentencing were nonviolent drug offenders and first time offenders who were receiving harsh sentences. Inmate populations and correction costs increased and pushed states to build more prisons. Judges were overloaded with these cases, and lengthy prison terms were mandated to these young offenders. Mandatory sentencing is an interesting topic in which I would like to discuss my opinions in going against mandatory sentencing. I will show the reasons for this topic, as well as give you my personal brief on which I support. To begin, Mandatory minimum sentences result in prison overcrowding, and based on several studies, it does not alleviate crime, for example crimes such as shoplifting or solicitation. These sentencing guidelines do not allow a judge to take into consideration the first time offender, differentiate the deviance level of the offender, and it does not allow for the judge to alter a punishment or judgment to each individual case. When mandatory sentencing came into effect, the drug lords they were trying to stop are not the ones being affected by the sentences. It is the nonviolent, low-level drug users who are overcrowding the prisons as a result of these sentences. Both the U.S. Sentencing Commission and the Department of Justice have determined that mandatory sentencing is not an effective way to deter crime. The 29th Annual French Quarter Festival of New Orleans New Orleans is a city where festivals are a way of life. There are festivals showcasing almost every cultural aspect of the city. However, The French Quarter Festival stands out as the largest free local music festival in the state of Louisiana. The 29th annual French Quarter Festival showcased a wide variety music, food, and special events that provided insight to what makes New Orleans so unique and full of life compared to other to cities in the county.The biggest aspect of the French Quarter Festival was the music that was showcased, the most prominent genres being Jazz, Cajun-Zydeco, and Blues. A variety of Jazz music was heard during the festival. Traditional Jazz sounds from bands such as the New Orleans Cottonmouth Kings and the Smoking Jazz Club could be heard on Friday. Saturday included a modern Jazz style with acts such as Big Daddy ââ¬ËOââ¬â¢ and Kermit Ruffins. The brass sounds of Jazz, such as the Treme Brass Band and the Stooges Brass Band were heard on the last day of the festival. There were also several Blues music acts present.The first day brought performers such as ââ¬ËWolfmanââ¬â¢ Washington and ââ¬ËBig Alââ¬â¢ Carson. The next day, Eharmonic Souls and John Lisi and the Delta Funk were among the artists. The Blues music that closed out the festival was from acts such as Vagabond Swing and Amanda Wallace. Lastly, Cajun-Zydeco music could also be heard at the festival. Some of the Cajun-Zydeco bands that opened for the festival were Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe and also Brandon Moreau and Cajungrass. The following day, Tank and the Zydeco Codebreakers and the Lost Bayou Ramblers were among the acts.Also, The Big Easy Playboys and Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots were among the Cajun-Zydeco acts on the final day of the festival. The traditional, modern, and brass Jazz musicians listed were just a few of the acts, but they provide examples of the talent at the 29th Ann ual French Quarter Festival. The French Quarter Festival had local vendors featuring the cuisines of the French Quarter, some of which were Cajun, Creole, and Poââ¬â¢boys. Cajun food was a cuisine that was prominent at the festival. Crawfish was a popular ingredient that was featured in several Cajun dishes at the festival such as in Crawfish Etouffee or Crawfish Cakes.Andouille sausage, found in gumbo and jambalaya was another aspect of the festival cuisine. Alligator, as kebabs or sausages, was also among the many Cajun dishes. Creole food also had a presence in the festivalââ¬â¢s cuisine. Rice dishes, such as Dirty Rice and also Red Beans and Rice, were among the Creole cuisine featured at the festival. There were also many Creole seafood dishes, such as Shrimp Jambalaya and Grits or Shrimp Remolaude available. Creole desserts such as King Cake or beignets were also among the dishes offered at the festival. Additionally, several varieties of Poââ¬â¢boy were staples of th e cuisine at the festival.Seafood Poââ¬â¢boys, such as the Shrimp Caminada Poââ¬â¢boy and the BBQ Oyster Poââ¬â¢boy, were among the Poââ¬â¢boys offered. Also available were Creole style Poââ¬â¢boys, such as the Cochon de lait Poââ¬â¢boy or Creole Hot Sausage Poââ¬â¢boy. Finally, Poââ¬â¢boys such as the Alligator Sausage Poââ¬â¢boy or the Blackened Catfish Poââ¬â¢boy were some Cajun- style Poââ¬â¢boys at the festival. Whether you were looking for Cajun, Creole, or Poââ¬â¢boys, the 29th Annual French Quarter Festival had the dishes discussed above along with many more available to choose from. Finally, the French Quarter Festival also held events such as educational lectures, kids events, and dance lessons.The French Quarter Festival strived to educate people on the impact that the local musical community provides. Super Sousaphone was a lecture by local sousaphone virtuoso Matt Perrine about the impact his career in many influential New Orleans ban ds created. Another lecture was Groove Interrupted, which focused on behind-the-scenes makings of the modern-day Jazz album. Funkify Your Life discussed The Meters, a New Orleans funk band, impact on New Orleans music. There were also several childrenââ¬â¢s events at the festival. The Kidââ¬â¢s Music Stage introduced children to festivalââ¬â¢s musical genres in a child-friendly way.The Satchmo collage project was another event where children decorated pieces of a collage of Louis Armstrong. Children were also able to create Victorian-style jewelry at the many crafts station at the festival. Also, several dance lessons were offered at the festival. NOLA Zydeco group hosted a class that taught the traditional Zydeco moves. BrassXcise, with Dancing Man 504, taught dance and exercise moves that are used in Second-Line parades. Also, the NOLA Jitterbugs taught traditional jazz dances such as the Jitterbug and the Charleston.The lectures, childrenââ¬â¢s events and dance classe s at the French Quarter Festival helped to add the educational and cultural aspect of the festival. The 29th annual French Quarter Festival provides a special aspect to festivals of New Orleans. It sought to showcase strictly the local aspects of the culture of New Orleans. Also unlike other festivals, it was also made free to the public. Those aspects and also the music, food, and events of the festival combined to create an experience unlike other festivals in New Orleans, one that is focused on the people of the city rather than just the city itself.

TSA Screening System Draws Criticism
Are the airlines getting a free ride on the taxpayers dime thanks to the Transportation Safety Administrations (TSA) new high-tech and high dollar system to detect fake boarding passes?In these days of print-at-home boarding passes and programs like Photoshop, the number of people illegally boarding planes and flying for free by using fake boarding passes and IDs has increased significantly. To the airlines, this is fraud that results in lost income. To honest, paying passengers, its an insult that results in higher ticket prices. To the TSA, its a gaping hole is security that could result in another terrorist attack.To the rescue comes the TSAs high-tech and high-cost CAT/BPSS -- Credential Authentication Technology and Boarding Pass Scanning System - now being tested at George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, Luis Muà ±oz Marà n International in San Juan, and Washington, D.C. Dulles International at an initial combined cost of $3.2 million.In testimony before the House Committe e on Homeland Security, Stephen M. Lord, director of homeland security and justice issues at the Government Accountability Office, reported that the estimated 20-year life cycle cost of the CAT/BPSS system is approximately $130 million based on a nationwide deployment of 4,000 units.What CAT/BPSS DoesCosting $100,000 each, and with multiple systems to eventually be installed by the TSA at all U.S. airports serving commercial flights, the CAT/BPSS system automatically compares the passengers ID to an extensive set of security features. Most modern forms of state-issued identification include encoded data, such as barcodes, holograms, magnetic stripes, embedded electrical circuits, and computer-readable text.CAT/BPPS also validates the authenticity of the passengers boarding pass at the first TSA security checkpoint using bar code readers and encryption techniques. The system is compatible with any barcode and can be used with paper boarding passes printed on a home computer, boarding passes printed by the airlines, or a paperless boarding passes that are sent to passengers mobile devices.br/>The system temporarily captures and displays the photograph from the passengers ID for viewing only by TSA agents to help them compare the photo to the person carrying the ID.Finally, CAT/BPPS compares the encoded data on the passengers ID to data on the boarding pass. If they match, they fly.Encountering the CAT/BPSS SystemAccording to the TSA, actually using the CAT/BPSS system will work like this: At the first TSA checkpoint, passengers will hand their ID to the TSA Travel Document Checker (TDC). The TDC will scan the passengers ID, while the passenger scans his or her boarding pass using a built-in scanner. TSA says that testing has shown the CAT/BPSS process takes no longer than the current process in which the TDC visually compares the passengers ID to the boarding pass.In response to concerns about the CAT/BPSS system and personal privacy, the TSA assures that the CA T/BPSS system automatically and permanently deletes all information it has gathered from the ID and the boarding pass. TSAs review of this matter indicates that the passenger went through screening. It is important to note that this passenger was subject to the same physical screening at the checkpoint as other passengers.While the stowaway succeeded in stealing from the airline by flying free on a clearly fraudulent boarding pass, no evidence was ever found relating the incident to terrorism.In other words, say critics, the CAT/BPSS is another expensive taxpayer-funded solution to something that, if TSA is doing its job properly, should not be a problem in the first place.

Plant a Billion Trees People Fight Global Warming
A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.-- Greek proverb A campaign to plant a billion trees in a single year was launched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2006. The Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign is intended to encourage people and organizations everywhere to take small but practical steps to reduce global warming, which many experts believe is the most important environmental challenge of the 21st century. Get Involved, Take Action, Plant a Tree Action does not need to be confined to the corridors of the negotiation halls,â⬠said Achim Steiner, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which is coordinating the campaign. Steiner noted that intergovernmental talks on tackling climate change can often be ââ¬Å"difficult, protracted and sometimes frustrating, especially for those looking onâ⬠instead of participating directly. ââ¬Å"But we cannot and must not lose heart,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"The campaign, which aims to plant a minimum of 1 billion trees in 2007, offers a direct and straightforward path down which all sectors of society can step to contribute to meeting the climate change challenge.â⬠A Prince and a Nobel Laureate Advocate Tree Planting In addition to the UNEP, the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign is backed by Kenyan environmentalist and politician Wangari Maathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004; Prince Albert II of Monaco; and the World Agroforestry Centre-ICRAF. According to the UNEP, rehabilitating tens of millions of hectares of degraded land and reforesting the Earth is necessary to restore the productivity of soil and water resources, and more trees will restore lost habitat, preserve biodiversity, and help to mitigate the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby helping to slow or reduce global warming. Billions of Trees Must Be Planted to Restore Lost Forests To make up for the loss of trees over the past decade, 130 million hectares (or 1.3 million square kilometers), an area as large as Peru, would have to be reforested. Accomplishing that would mean planting about 14 billion trees every year for 10 years in a row, the equivalent of every person on Earth planting and caring for at least two seedlings annually.à ââ¬Å"The Billion Tree Campaign is but an acorn, but it can also be practically and symbolically a significant expression of our common determination to make a difference in developing and developed countries alike,â⬠Steiner said. ââ¬Å"We have but a short time to avert serious climate change. We need action. ââ¬Å"We need to plant trees alongside other concrete community-minded actions and in doing so send a signal to the corridors of political power across the globe that the watching and waiting is over ââ¬â that countering climate change can take root via one billion small but significant acts in our gardens, parks, countryside and rural areas,â⬠he said. Other actions people can take to help mitigate or reduce climate change include driving less, switching off lights in empty rooms, and turning off electrical appliances rather than leaving them on standby. For example, it is estimated that if everyone in the United Kingdom switched off TV sets and other appliances instead of leaving them on standby, it would save enough electricity to power close to 3 million homes for a year. The idea for the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign was inspired by Wangari Maathai. When representatives of a corporate group in the United States told her they were planning to plant a million trees, she said: ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s great, but what we really need is to plant a billion trees.â⬠Take the Pledge and Plant a Tree The campaign encourages people and organizations around the world to enter pledges on a website hosted by the UNEP. The campaign is open to everyoneââ¬âconcerned citizens, schools, community groups, nonprofit organizations, farmers, businesses, and local and national governments. A pledge can be anything from a single tree to 10 million trees. The campaign identifies four key areas for planting: degraded natural forests and wilderness areas; farms and rural landscapes; sustainably managed plantations; and urban environments, but it can also begin with a single tree in a backyard. Blood brothers The response phase Essay After previously reading the text, Blood Brothers, our task was to participate in two workshops. Both hopefully designed to enhance our knowledge of the text, and widen our range of drama techniques and medium. To help with the response of the play, Adrian Deakes joined us, to help with our understanding and feeling of the play, and to improve and develop our performances through the use of explorative strategies. Subtext was used in one of our exercises that day. In pairs, we devised a short performance about the first time that Mickey and Eddie meet. The audience knew that both boys were twin brothers but the actors themselves had no idea. Mickey and Eddie sit, eating sweets, oblivious to their background, Oh, that sounds like super fun. They are both just enjoying each others company. It is also used when Eddie, Linda and Mickey play together for the first time. Hi-ya, Eddie. Look weve got Sammys air gun. Self-consciously Eddie is very aware of the dangers, But Mickey I mean suppose we get caught by a policeman. However, Mickey is unaware of the problem, and doesnt see the law as a big deal. This is subtext, as the audience have a good idea what is to follow and realise that this will set the fate of the brothers, as they get older, Aah take no notice. Weve been caught loads of times by a policeman. By using subtext, in this way, I gained an insight into how the characters may develop later on in the text. I think the writers used subtext in this particular scene to highlight the later problem of guns, and to show the audience a clearer picture of the characters. The tone of voices I this scene, are light-hearted and joyful. They are young children, unaware of the dangers around them, or of the things that are to come. The facial expressions are smiling, and a look of deep concentration as each child in turn, aims at the statue in the park. The pace of the scene is quite fast, something is always happening, there is always some-one speaking. I think this is done to involve the audience and let them become caught up in the moment of childish play. It is the calm before the storm. There is a sense of anti-climax about this scene, as the audience lay in wait to see if either brothers finds out about their fraternity. During the day, Adrian asked us to take part in many improvisation exercises. We chose three stages from childhood to adulthood to demonstrate how Mickey and Lindas relationship changed. With my partner, we chose, aged 11, aged 16, and aged 21. We used physicality to communicate to the audience. When they were both aged 11, we showed how Mickey and Linda did not see each other as a compatible couple. They were not at the age where their feelings towards members of the opposite sex were clear. Mickey tripped up Linda as she was walking down the corridor, and raced her to the top of the hill. I portrayed Linda as a competitive young child, who idolised Mickey, but did not see herself as an inferior being. She felt that it was a competition to see which one of them was the best. At this stage their relationship was purely platonic. My partner helped me to achieve my role whilst he played Mickey. He showed how Mickey fought with Linda, and saw her as just a girl who he could muck around with. He didnt notice Linda in a girlfriend perspective. Mickey showed this through using his physicality throughout the improvisation. He pushed her as though she was the same as any male, he joked with her, and tripped her up, as he saw no difference between Linda and a boy. She is dressed in high heels and short skirt. She is really attracted to Mickey. When she catches sight of Mickey, she hitches her skirt up even higher, undoes her buttons on her school shirt so that some flesh is visible and starts to walk in a really seductive manner towards him. When she reaches the spot where Mickey is, she whispers something in his ear, and then stalks off. I then, as Linda turned round and shouted down the hall, See you on the bus Mickey. Ill save you a seat, lover-boy! My partner helped me to get into character in this scene with his characterisation of Mickey. He played Mickey as a bashful teenager. Previously, Mickey had treated Linda as another one of the lads. Suddenly when he sees Linda down the corridor, aged 16 he acts differently. As Linda walks towards him, we see him stare at her breasts, and look flustered at doing so. He is embarrassed at Lindas obvious flirting and doesnt know how to respond. He quickly looks at the floor when he catches Lindas eye and is appalled when Linda addresses him so publicly about her feelings. Its five years later, and Mickey and Linda is a couple. Their physicality is different to when they just fancied each other. Little things reflect the couples feelings for one another. When they think no one else is watching, they are so kind and considerate to each other. They are locked together, as they feel united. Marriage has changed them. As a couple theyve been through some hard times and it shows in their relationship and their physicality towards each other. They have a child and their responsibilities lie as parents. I played Linda as a caring woman who was supportive and friendly towards her husband through times of need. Improvisation was used throughout the day to help us build an understanding of the characters and of the play. In pairs, we improvised a scene where Linda asks Eddie for help after seven years of Mickey being inside prison. She goes to his office. At this point in Eddies life, he is a well-paid councillor, and is an authority figure in the town. He is highly respected, and wealthy. Despite this, he was willing to help Linda. We showed this in our devised performances. I played Linda, who is at the other end of the status scale. She is poor, and desperate. She needs a job, home and money to support her family when Mickey gets out of prison. This was a particularly hard part of Lindas character to play. She is vulnerable and frightened. As Linda, I went to Eddies office. With me was my seven-year-old son. Eddie had been pre-warned of my visit by telephone conversation. In our scene we used the drama technique cross cutting to show the mixed reactions of both adults. Eddie was pacing his office, wringing his hands with an apprehensive look on his face. My partner helped by his characterisation of Eddie because I then knew how to play Linda, and how to portray her feelings. As I was heading up the stairs towards Eddies office, I kept checking my hair, and fixing my sons clothes. I wanted to make a good impression after all these years apart. When I got to the door, I showed my nervousness by fiddling with my hair. I was about to ask Eddie for some major favours, and although I knew he was too nice to turn me down, I felt disappointed that my life had turned into such a mess. When the door opened and I came face to face with Eddie it was awkward, as we didnt quite know how to greet each other. We showed that they were close by sitting very close to each other and holding hands. During the day we experimented with many different explorative strategies. We used prepared improvisation and spontaneous improvisation during exercises to help with our perception of the characters, and to give us an insight into the development of their personalities. This greatly helped in the portrayal of the characters as I could gain an idea about what their reactions may be to some of the stimulus. Cross cutting was used in the office scene when Linda was asking Eddie for help. The reason for this is to communicate to the audience the reactions of both characters, and their feelings and thoughts at what is going on n the scene. Role-play was used when becoming a particular character out of the book, Blood Brothers. Being in role helped me to gain knowledge of the characters personalities and I could then portray a character in a particular way. At the end of the day it was time to reflect at how these exercises helped me to understand what the play and the characters were trying to communicate to the audience. I felt that the play was trying to show the audience that coincidences happen. Throughout the days work, I felt I gained so much more insight into the play. Now, I can see that instead of the play being based on superstition and fate it ran deeper into the slightly more complexed issues, such as love, betrayal, and hidden identity.
